Gilgit (Bureau report): Speaker Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) Legislative Assembly Syed Amjad Ali Zaidi submitted his resignation to Governor G-B on Wednesday after two and half years since the current assembly was formed after the 2020 election.
Pakistan Tehreek Insaf G-B has nominated the Deputy GBLA Speaker Nazir Ahmad Advocate as the new speaker.
The resignation was submitted to Governor G-B at Governor House Gilgit. Speaker designate Nazir Ahmed Advocate, Senior Minister Colonel Retired Obaidullah Baig, Interior Advisor Shams Lone, Education Minister Raja Azam Khan, Parliamentary Secretary Dilshad Bano and Parliamentary Secretary Kulsoom Farman were present on this occasion.
In a statement issued to the media with reference to the resignation of the speaker, Chief Minister G-B Khalid Khurshid has said that Syed Amjad Zaidi has resigned and Nazir Ahmad Advocate has been nominated by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf as the new speaker.
According to the statement, the new development is an implementation of an agreement within the party during the 2020 elections. According to the agreement, the speaker Amjad Zaidi was supposed to resign and be replaced by Nazir Ahmad Advocate as the new speaker after two and half years.
“I am very happy that PTI Gilgit-Baltistan has fulfilled this important election promise with mutual unity and understanding even in difficult circumstances. I pay tribute to Syed Amjad Zaidi for his decision to resign in a dignified manner to fulfill this promise.”, observed the CM G-B
Expressing his hope the CM G-B has said that Nazir Ahmed Advocate would execute his responsibilities as speaker Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly efficiently by maintaining and establishing good democratic traditions.
It is pertinent to note that Amjad Zaidi had refused to resign as speaker G-B assembly. CM G-B had a special meeting with the outgoing speaker on Tuesday but he had failed to secure resignation from him.
Amjad Zaidi’s refusal to resign had created deep divisions within the party as a no-confidence motion supported by 16 members of treasury benches was submitted to the secretary G-B assembly on Tuesday against the former speaker.
However, contrary to all suppositions and calculations, Amjad Zaidi submitted his resignation to Governor G-B Syed Mehdi Shah on Wednesday.
