Gilgit (Staff reporter): A student of Karakoram International University (KIU), Muhammad Zahir 24, allegedly committed suicide today by jumping into the River Indus from the Zulfiqarabad bridge in Gilgit city.
Rescue 1122 team, upon getting the information, immediately reached the site and launched a search operation. However, owing to the presence of a high quantity of soil and the fast water flow of the river the dead body could not be found.
Immediately after getting the information, the SHO KIU police station also reached the site. The police registered the case as per laws related to the incident and started the investigation.
According to a government survey, there exists a high rate of suicides in the region with the Ghizer district being at the top. In the last 5 years, 229 people reportedly committed suicide with 11 suicide cases in the last month only.
