Gilgit (Bureau Report): The ruling party Pakistan Tehreek Insaf’s members submit a no-confidence motion to the Assembly secretariat against speaker G-B Assembly Amjad Zaidi on Tuesday.
The move came after the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) Khalid Khurshid failed to secure the resignation of Amjad Zaidi from his position as Speaker Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly.
Signed by 16 government members, the resolution was presented to the Secretary Assembly by Forest Minister Raja Zakaria and Finance Minister Javed Ali Manwa.
According to the law, the powers of the Speaker are suspended after a no-confidence motion is tabled and an election for the Speaker has to be held within seven days.
It is pertinent to note that after the G-B Legislative Assembly elections in 2020, the appointment to the positions of speaker and deputy speaker was brought about according to an agreement.
As per the agreement, the current speaker assembly Amjad Zaidi would act as a speaker for the first two and half years. For the next two and half years, advocate Nazir Ahmad would serve as the speaker assembly. However, Amjad Zaidi is not ready to relinquish his current position as speaker G-B assembly despite the lapse of the stipulated time.
To resolve the issue between the speaker and the deputy speaker, the chief minister G-B chaired a party meeting. During the meeting, the speaker Amjad Zaidi is reported to have refused to resign from his position as speaker G-B assembly under any circumstances.
