Gilgit (Parliamentary Reporter): Speaker Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA) Nazir Ahmad has formed a parliamentary committee to expedite work on restoration of flood-affected infrastructure in the GB.
The committee was formed on the second day of the 23rd Session of GBLA under the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee Gilgit-Baltistan Ayub Waziri.
Speaking on the adjournment motion by Member of Assembly Javed Ali Manwa regarding the flood damage, Interior Minister Shamsul Haq Lone said that 19 houses were completely affected while 33 houses were partially affected by the recent flood. The government has provided relief materials to the victims and started work for their rehabilitation, further added Shams Lone.
While speaking on the occasion, Deputy Speaker GBLA Sadia Danish said that practical work is not being done for the rehabilitation of flood victims in Gilgit-Baltistan.
She said some organizations are doing only paperwork for their benefit. Consequently, the work in the affected areas is very poor.
Sadia Danish emphasized apprising the house (GBLA) of the work done for flood awareness and rehabilitation under the GLOF Project.
While speaking on the occasion, the member Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Nawaz Khan Naji said that a certain section gets benefits from the flood while the poor people cry.
He said that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are better able to help victims during natural disasters than government organizations. There is no dearth of resources, the government just needs to correct its policies, further said Naji.
