G-B government and opposition form special committee to address wheat crisis

Gilgit (Correspondent): The Gilgit-Baltistan government and opposition members passed a resolution demanding the federal government reverse the new wheat prices on Wednesday in the G-B Legislative Assembly session.

The resolution also demanded an increase in the supply of subsidized wheat to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan to address the current issue of the wheat crisis in the region.

According to the resolution, a special seven-member committee under the chairmanship of opposition leader Amjad Hussain advocate will negotiate with the federal government on the wheat issue.

The committee members include Ghulam Muhammad, Muhammad Haji Gulbar, Rehmat Khaliq, Qazim Masim, Javed Ali Manwa, and Suhail Abbas.

Presented by Minister Finance- G-B Javed Ali Manwa, the resolution demanded the federal government to bring wheat prices to an appropriate level and ensure the supply of 1.6 million wheat sacs to G-B.

The resolution also demanded the federal government to provide Rs. 5 per annum as part of the agriculture support fund to enable people of G-B to become self-sufficient in wheat production at the local level.  

The resolution states that the special committee will negotiate with the federal government to overcome the wheat crisis and address issues before potential large-scale agitation in G-B.
