Gilgit (PR): Chaired by Provincial Minister Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) Ghulam Muhammad, an important consultative meeting took place on Friday in Gilgit city to formulate a sustainable solution to the wheat shortage in the region.
The consultative meeting was attended by the members of GB Legislative Assembly, Grand Jirga, and representatives of the Awami Action Committee.
Food Minister Ghulam Mohammad briefed meeting participants on the historical context of provision of wheat subsidy and measure taken in this regard by successive governments.
He stressed the need for preparing a coordinated strategy considering the national decline in wheat production and price hikes. The approach involves appropriately adjusting prices without disproportionately burdening the common man.
During the meeting, consensus was developed to introduce a biometric system for fair and transparent distribution of subsidized wheat and flour.
The decision includes expanding the quota and ensuring the supply of high-quality, hygienic wheat and flour to the public.
During the consultative session, a decision was made to temporarily defer the wheat survey at the request of the grand jirga and Awami Action Committee.
