Gilgit (Staff reporter): Due to heavy down pour in Gilgit-Baltistan since last night, traffic has been affected on the Karakoram highway and inter-district roads.
KKH is blocked at several place leaving passengers traveling to and from down country stranded.
The authorities had already issued weather alert two days ago avoid travel and movement in the face of potential heavy down pour, flooding, and landslides. There is always a risk of landslides and mudslides on Karakoram even during light rainfall.
If rains continue for few more days, they can cause a kind of emergency in Gilgit-Baltistan because of blockage of KKH at several places. At the moment, there is hardly any storage of wheat, petrol, diesel, liquid gas and other essential items.
Travel on KKH is not free of risk while it is raining. Raining that started last night stopped at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, while it is still raining in the upper areas.
According to reports, rain and snow fall also have started in the upper regions of G-B posing likely blockage of linked roads. With Eid coming on head there can be difficulties in the delivery of essential goods to these areas.
Keeping the present rainfall in view, GBDMA, Rescue 1122 and district administration need to remain on high alert to deal with any emergency.
