Meet Sher Baz, a young man, from Singul Valley in Ghizer, Gilgit-Baltistan, whose journey from a government school to the world-renowned University of Nebraska Omaha is a testament to resolute determination and hard work.
Born to Rehmat Nabi Khan, Sher Baz’s early education began at government school in Singul Valley. It was a government school with scarce resources to support student learning. However, Sher Baz persevered as he was driven by a dream to excel even at such a young age.
Struggling to make ends meet, I began teaching at a private school in Karachi despite facing mockery for my speech – yet, I persisted.

He studied there until he got admission in an English medium private school ‘Ghizer Public School in Gahkuch’. His transition to form an Urdu medium government school to an English-medium private sector school in the 9th grade was not less than a challenge. The sudden switch from Urdu to English was a daunting task, and his matriculation results reflected this struggle.
Sher Baz was undeterred in the face of all new challenges he was facing. After matriculation, he came to Karachi to further continue his education, where he pursued his intermediate education at City College while working to support himself. The journey was far from smooth, but it was in Karachi that he began his pursued of improvement in his English language skills.
After completing his intermediate education, Sher Baz started to teach at a private school in Metroville, Karachi. Here, he faced another set of challenges. His communication skills were not at par with what was required in the classroom, and students often made fun of him. Yet, he refused to give up, pouring his heart and soul into his work. His determination paid off, and he eventually moved to a better-paying position at another school.

Sher Baz’s journey took another turn when he got admission in a language center to further improve his English proficiency. Although his English skills were far from perfect at the time, he spent countless hours into improvement. Eight months later, he achieved a defining moment in his life, securing the first position in a speech and debate competition at the center. This victory marked a turning point, boosting his confidence and expanding his horizons.
Throughout his journey, Sher Baz never forgot the unwavering support of his parents, especially his mother. Their sacrifices and encouragement were the pillars that held him up during his darkest moments.
Today, Sher Baz stands as a School Head at Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan, which is a testament to his incredible journey from a government school in Singul to a renowned educational institution. His journey to the United States as part of the Teaching Excellence and Achievements Program (TEA) at the University of Nebraska Omaha is a shining example of what one can achieve through continued commitment and demonstration of resilience.
His advice to young people is simple but profound: work hard, stay focused on your vision, and never give in to obstacles. The path to success may be riddled with difficulties, but with determination and optimism, you can achieve your goals.
