Islamabad (PR): In a significant development, Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government signed Memorandums with Nestle, Pepsi and Coca-Cola in connection with Return and Recycle of PET bottles at Gilgit-Baltistan House on Wednesday.
According to the MoUs, each company will set up PET bottle crushing and baling units in two district headquarters in G-B. The companies will also set up collection points for PET bottles in urban centers across Gilgit-Baltistan. The Gilgit-Baltistan Environmental Protection Agency will be the focal agency on behalf representing the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan, and CoRe will act as the focal point on behalf of the companies.
Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Secretary, Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani, has overseen the entire process of setting up the PET bottle Return System from, its inception to implementation. The ceremony held at Gilgit-Baltistan House Islamabad was attended by senior officials of Gilgit-Baltistan Government and Nestle, Pepsi and Coca-Cola.
According to MoUs, after installation of crushing and baling units and establishment of collection points, the responsibility for managing the system will be transferred to the GB Waste Management Company. This company will be responsible for collecting and baling PET bottles, and they will collaborate with a private contractor.
The GB Environmental Protection Agency will monitor the implementation of the system. This PET Return System initiative will help protect the natural environment and mitigate pollution.
