Kharmang district in G-B faces highest Stunting and Malnutrition rates in Pakistan, nutrition experts

Skardu (PR): In a workshop organized on ‘Emergency Food and Nutrition Response” in Skardu on Thursday, the nutrition experts revealed that Kharmang district has the highest rates of stunting and malnutrition at the national level.

Attended by members of civil society, representatives of HWs and Ehsaas Nashunuma, the workshop was organized by the Planning and Development Department Gilgit-Baltistan.

While addressing the participants, Consultant Scaling Up Nutrition Planning Dr. Nader Shah said that malnutrition in Kharmang district is 59% whereas it is 46% at the national level.

He said the planning and development department is making efforts to scale up nutrition in Kharmang district and bring improvement in nutrition and ECD. Efforts are being made six sectors of health, education, women development and others.

He further said the situation has been communicated with the district administration to work together to cover nutrition under an international strategy. It’s high time to workout how we can provide the victims with balanced nutrition during natural calamities.

He further said from next year, mixed surveys would be conducted in Gilgit-Baltistan to review the performance of the last six years.

Dr. Shah said twenty two nutrition officers working in the entire province who are working day and night at the grass root level discouraging substandard items in our surroundings including schools.

The government is also providing nutritional supplements and guidance through these nutrition officers, further added Dr. Shah.
