Embezzlement of public funds in Cooperative Bank of Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit (PR): On instructions of chief minister Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) Khalid Khurshid, chief secretary G-B Muhyiddin Ahmed Wani chaired a special meeting to review the progress in the investigation of embezzlement of public funds in Astore branch of the Karakoram Cooperative Bank Limited.

During the meeting, the police investigation team informed the chief secretary G-B about the progress in the investigation of embezzlement of billions of rupees.

While briefing chief secretary about the case, DIG and the investigation officers of crime Branch informed about the facts that emerged from the investigation from the people involved in the mega fraud.

During the briefing, the investigation team stated that due to court related technical and procedural issues related to the courts, it is facing obstacles in taking effective action against the criminals.

Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan appreciated the efforts of the police department for exposing the scam in the case and exposing the elements involved in the fraud. However, he expressed his concern over the meager amount that police was able to recover so far.

During the meeting, chief secretary G-B Mohiuddin Ahmad Wani and inspector general of police Muhammad Saeed Wazir expressed their commitment to bring the culprits to book. They will not allow anyone to exert any pressure or interfere to influence the investigation regarding embezzlement of public funds.

It is pertinent to note that some elements in Astore branch of Cooperative Bank in Gilgit-Baltistan have allegedly embezzled Rs. 120 million.

After the allegations coming to surface, chief secretary G-B had issued an order to investigate and public the findings. He has issued orders to police department to initiate investigation on modern lines and devise a solid strategy to deal with such crimes in future.

According to the order, chief secretary G-B wanted the people of Gilgit-Baltistan to know the elements involved in the mega scandal and trust the investigation agencies.
