Gilgit Bar Association elects its new president and general secretary

Gilgit (Court reporter): In the annual election of the Gilgit Bar Association held on Saturday, Shahid Abbas Advocate and Waqas Ahmad Advocate got elected as president and general secretary respectively.

Out of a total of 403 votes for both top slots, Shahid Abbas Advocate got 171 votes whereas Waqas Ahmed Advocate got 201 votes.

Other presidential candidates included Muntazir Abbas advocate and Shah Faisal Khan who were able to get 58 and 59 votes respectively. The running-up candidate for the the position of general secretary Jabir Nazir advocate managed to get 81 votes.

Advocate Nawaz Akash acted as election commissioner whereas Arsalan advocate and Numan Javed advocate were election commission members.

The voting process started at 10:00PM and lasted till 04:00 PM without any stop in a peaceful manner.

The election set an exciting ambiance. According to the lawyers they witnessed such enthusiasm in the district bar elections for the first time. Large-size posters were displayed with photos of the candidates in the voting and court premises. A large number of women lawyers also cast their votes in the elections.

Speaking to the lawyers after the announcement of election results, the newly elected officials of Gilgit Bar Association said the election is a democratic process and we all have the same goal to struggle for the rights of lawyers.

The newly elected officials thanked the lawyers’ community for participation in the polls. They also thanked the journalist community for giving coverage to the election process.
