Gilgit: An important meeting of the Awami Action Committee Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) took place in Gilgit city on Wednesday. The meeting was presided over by the chairman of the committee Fida Hussain.
The central cabinet members and senior leaders of the Awami Action Committee participated in the meeting. The leaders of the committee from other districts also participated online.
The participants of the meeting expressed their concern over the government’s decision to provide a targeted wheat subsidy. They feared the purpose of targeting the wheat subsidy was to limit and then phase it out completely.
The meeting participants demanded the government revise anti-people measures, or else be ready to face severe public protest. The government wants to create division among people by providing targeted wheat subsidies.
They said wheat subsidy is not a charity, it is rather an inalienable right of the people as per international and national law. We would not sit silent and raise our voices until the government restores the full wheat subsidy.
The Awami Action Committee demanded the secretary and minister power to ensure uninterrupted power supply during sehr and iftar, taraweeh, shab al-qadr, and majalis during the month of Ramadan.
Load shedding will not be tolerated during these worship days, said the participants. They further said rulers have money to enjoy at Zaman park, and they should invest some money to ensure uninterrupted power supply by running generators during the holy month.
They said the people of Gilgit-Baltistan have rejected the proposed land reforms act. Any attempts to impose this act on the people will be resisted with full force. Those supporting the bill purportedly on behalf of the action committee are a conspiratorial self-made group. There is no connection, these government groups are criminals and traitors to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The participants demanded the government of G-B to give a 50% subsidy on food items, establish utility stores at a different level, restore 40 kg of flour subsidy and improve the quality of flour so that people can have two meals a day in this holy month.
The participants demanded to ensure the implementation of its demands else it will be forced to stage a strong protest during the month of Ramadan.
